A/Prof Ian Francis Retires from Surgery

After years of long hours and hard work, A/Prof Ian Francis has entered a new phase of his life. He has retired from surgery, having performed his last cataract surgery at Chatswood Private Hospital on the 10th of August. A/Prof Francis bids farewell to the hospital as he takes up medical consulting full time in Ophthalmology.

Colleagues farewelled A/Prof Francis at a get together held in Chatswood, the evening was enjoyed by all and it was a bittersweet experience to see him retire. Chatswood Private Hospital CEO/Director, Roger Cronin said, “It was our absolute pleasure and privilege and a great night was had by all.” He also added, “without Ian’s contribution of many years, we would not be here at all.”

Over the last 18 years, A/Prof Ian Francis has been a tremendous asset to the hospital. He has always strived for the best surgical outcome and his patients have always been in good hands. Holding a PhD on “The Watery Eye” and having over 240 peer-reviewed publications, his extent of ophthalmic knowledge has gained him numerous awards for excellence in teaching. He has also been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for services to medicine as an Ophthalmologist.

He specialized in Cataract Surgery, Neuro-Ophthalmology and General Ophthalmology. Chatswood has been the hub for his practice for the past 30 years and for the past 18 years he has operated at Ophthalmic Surgery Centre and Chatswood Private Hospital.

A/Prof Francis has had an exciting medical journey, having studied and worked in England, Europe, North America and The Gambia, West Africa. Medical school, a prosperous career, and raising a family, he has done it all. Now comes the time to look back with pride and satisfaction and to look forward with hope and anticipation of what’s to come. Chatswood Private Hospital congratulates him on his retirement from surgery and wishes him the very best for the future.
